Federal Issues
Protecting Our People, Our Values and Our Economy
Undoubtedly, the Trump Administration represents a distressful period in American history. We have seen unmitigated chaos across every aspect of federal governance. As citizens and residents of this country, we are impacted daily by the actions of this President, his deputies and his friends.
The fact is that federal workers are the backbone of Maryland’s economy—especially here in Baltimore County, where thousands of families depend on stable government jobs. But too often, these workers have been targeted by reckless shutdown threats, harmful policy changes and leadership that sees them as expendable.
Furthermore, our education system, the American social safety net and other government services from our transit systems to infrastructure and public safety, are deeply impacted and dependent on the federal government.
But America was founded on the principle that we are capable of self-governance. We do not work for the President; he works for us. The American spirit believes that we, as individuals, are the antidote to tyranny.
Nick Stewart is not afraid to stand up for the values that have defined America since its founding and he will fight for the people of Baltimore County and their right to the American Dream and the American way.
Nick’s Actions to Combat Federal Chaos
- Terminate MOU: In the first 100 days, we will end the Memorandum of Understanding between Baltimore County and ICE to ensure that law enforcement in Baltimore County follows the Constitution.
- Support our Immigrant Community: Through a fully staffed and funded Office of Immigration Affairs, we will meet all of our residents where they are by providing services through community partners, community schools and at their homes. Read more here.
- Help Schools Navigate ICE: In partnership with BCPS and Office of Immigration Affairs, we will define protocols and supports so that school leaders can navigate potential ICE enforcement actions against BCPS students and families, so that everyone understands their rights, responsibilities and is protected.
- Standing Up and Speaking Out: Advocate for workers harmed by political targeting or unfair policy changes, including standing up for those impacted by Trump-era cuts, shutdowns and instability.
- Ensure Accessible Benefits: Guarantee access to critical benefits like unemployment insurance, health coverage and essential support for displaced workers.
- Career Assistance: Provide direct career assistance such as offering resume counseling, one-on-one job coaching, upskilling opportunities and mental health resources to help federal employees and contractors navigate job disruptions.
- Legal Aid: Partner with legal aid providers to offer advocacy and, when appropriate, support litigation to defend the rights of workers and residents, regardless of immigration status.
- Strengthen Local and Private Job Market: Drive long-term economic resilience by developing a comprehensive strategy to grow Baltimore County’s economy, attract diverse industries and reduce overreliance on federal employment alone.
- No Wrong Door: Reimagine workforce services with a concierge-style, “no-wrong-door” approach, ensuring federal workers, contractors and their families get responsive, real-time help navigating county resources.
As an attorney and a community leader, Nick Stewart is not afraid of litigating for what is right. He will sue and is willing to be sued to stand up for the people of Baltimore County.
Baltimore County deserves leadership that will not bow to bullies and will not cower to despots.
We will overcome these dark times by sticking together, remembering who we are and fighting for each other and our values.
